Mrs Obama busy in kitchen garden

The White House Garden began its third growing season this week as Michelle Obama planted seeds and plants from Thomas Jefferson’s vast vegetable garden.

“The greatest service which can be rendered to any country is to add a useful plant to its culture,” Thomas Jefferson, America’s foremost presidential gardener, once said. First Lady Michelle Obama’s version of that pronouncement might be “The greatest service that can be rendered to any community is to add a useful garden”

Check out the aptly named Obamafoodorama blog for more info on this story:

Not content with gardening , the First Lady is also writing a book about her experiences of planting a veg garden which she hopes will inspire Americans to think about what they eat:

I am not an experienced gardener - more of an enthusiastic amateur who learns by trial and error and who is keen to "manage" the effects of shifting weather patterns on my garden. Writing this blog is my passion and it has evolved over 12 years to inspire engagement with climate change outside our back doors, in our personal gardens and green spaces. My mission is to fertilise and expand this platform to grow a community of global gardeners communicating about the effects of climate change on our plants and exploring how each individual can make small changes in our lives to become more sustainable. The future of our gardens and #OurPlanet is in our hands - please plant your own seeds for our collective sustainable future.
