The latest architectural enhancement planned for London looks like it will make gardening main”stream” and bring even more greeness to the City.
A stunning new bridge across the Thames could appear in the capital if designs from the man who brought us the London 2012 Olympic Cauldron are accepted.
Thomas Heatherwick’s ‘floating oasis’ design would be the first crossing since the Millennium Bridge in 2002 and would provide pedestrians with a route from Temple to the South Bank.
Mr Heatherwick said: “With its rich heritage of allotments, gardens, heathland, parks and squares, London is one of the greenest cities in the world.
Mr Heatherwick’s cauldron made up of 204 copper stems was a highlight of the finale for the London 2012 opening ceremony.
“The idea is to connect north and south London with a garden.”
Such a beautifully simple architectural concept! – just hope the £60 million funding can be found and planning permissionwill be granted
Thomas Heatherwick’s design has been described as “sensational” by Joanna Lumley, who campaigned for the bridge.
Featuring grasses, trees and wild flowers it was selected after a tendering process, said Transport for London (TfL).
