Climate Change

                                      Mediterranean gardening to beat drought

Beating the drought this summer is easy if you choose the right plants that cope well with lack of water and do not require maintenance – unlike the traditional bedding plants that many UK gardens plant every year.

To keep your garden looking wonderful all summer long with no or little water try choosing Mediterranean plants that offer a delightful range of colours, varied textures and hypnotic scents.

These plants are used to surviving in the driest and hottest summers and they  can be used in a variety of different ways. Check the listings on this section of my blog for inspiration on drought gardening.http://www.myclimatechangegarden.com/blog/category/drought-gardening-mediterranean

Or watch these videos which I actually filmed a few years back but which are so right for surviving the 2012 drought :

I am not an experienced gardener - more of an enthusiastic amateur who learns by trial and error and who is keen to "manage" the effects of shifting weather patterns on my garden. Writing this blog is my passion and it has evolved over 12 years to inspire engagement with climate change outside our back doors, in our personal gardens and green spaces. My mission is to fertilise and expand this platform to grow a community of global gardeners communicating about the effects of climate change on our plants and exploring how each individual can make small changes in our lives to become more sustainable. The future of our gardens and #OurPlanet is in our hands - please plant your own seeds for our collective sustainable future.

My book ‘Designing and Creating a Mediterranean Garden’ (Crowood Press)is specifically aimed at creating waterwise gardens in cooler climates. The Mediterranean Garden Society http://www.MediterraneanGardenSociety.org also produces a dry plants list for UK gardens. It’s the only way to go with water becoming so scarce and expensive!
